39 Bible Verses that contain the words the Son of Man

39 Bible Verses that contain the words "Son of Man"

The expression or phrase "Son of Man" is mentioned 39 times in the New Testament of the Bible (KJV) and mentioned many more times in the Old Testament often in relation to prophecy and this term or phrase is used in relation to Jesus and even by Jesus. Obviously there is some importance to this reference.  But surely Jesus is the "Son of God" is the question that everybody asks, so why is he described and often describes himself in the Bible as the "Son of Man"?

This is another of those conundrums just like "The Parables of Jesus" and why  the word Verily appears so  frequently in shorter teachings when Jesus spoke.

To get to the root and the very beginning of this, you have to go to Daniel 7:13-14 which was a prophecy by Daniel of the coming of Jesus Christ.

13. I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
14. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Jesus was born of a virgin called Mary that became pregnant by the Holy Spirit and who gave birth to The Son of God who was in human form and he was aligned with humanity as a result but also in alignment with God. He was the second state in the Tri State or the Trinity of "The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost (Spirit)" often heard in the infamous blessings in Churches even  to this very day "I bless you in the name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost"

So "The Son of Man" has a double meaning in that he is "The Son of God" but in human form delivered to save mankind from his sins and therefore he describes himself as "The Son of Man"

This dilemma was revealed just before the crucifixion when he was approached by the elders and high priests as demonstrated very clearly in Matthew 26:63-64

Matthew 26:63
But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.

Matthew 26:64
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

More detail is given in Luke 22:66-71

66.And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
67. Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68. And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
69. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
70. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
71. And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

In summary the Chief Priests think he has answered in a cryptic way that he is the "Son of God" whereas Jesus says "You are saying I am the "Son of God" but I call myself "The Son of Man". Jesus knows it does not matter what answer he gives........ his destiny which is in prophecy is to be crucified.

Why does he keep using this "Son of Man" line? Because he is fulfilling the prophecy mentioned in Daniel 7:13-14, the Prophecy of Daniel all those years ago where Daniel called him "The Son of Man". In that prophecy though Jesus is described as "behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven" which is about as far removed from the situation he was in at the time being grilled by the chief priests, scribes and elders, but he sticks to his guns regardless.

The Prophet Ezekiel is referenced in the Bible 93 times as the "Son of Man" but he was the product of male and female human flesh whereas Jesus was the product of the combining of Holy Spirit and Female Human Flesh. Son of Man can be interpreted as meaning a product of human flesh in human form.

Finally the Son of Man is referenced twice in the Book of Revelation by St John the Divine that foretells of the "Son of Man" and his return which would be the infamous "Second Coming"

The Teachings of Jesus that feature the word Verily

Jesus and the Word Verily?

This is an in depth look at the Sayings or Teachings of Jesus which are distinct from the "Parables" of Jesus (see The Parables of Jesus). These sayings are seen throughout the New Testament that begin with Verily or even Verily Verily being used frequently in the King James Version of the Bible (KJV). Why is this?

“Verily” (meaning truly) translates the word “Amen” which is a Hebrew word left untranslated in the Greek New Testament. If we think about this when we pray we also say Amen at the end of the prayer. BUT  literally, Jesus says “Amen,  I say to you.” when he is preaching in the Bible. Only Jesus speaks like this in the Bible, not even one of his twelve disciples speaks in this way. Countless times He says “Amen, I say to you”. In John his sayings double the certainty: “Amen, Amen I say to you.” And on every occasion it’s the preface to his teaching. but Jesus actually uses this phrase in his own sayings. Most frequently  in Matthew and also doubled many times in John amongst many other Books in the New Testament!

In the New International Version of the Bible (the one most commonly seen in the Church) Verily has been translated to "Truly" and this word was placed normally at the beginning of the saying to illustrate some importance to what was being said. This happened quite frequently throughout the New Testament, frequently enough for it to be noticed hence this article. These sayings are normally contained in one or at maximum a couple of verses and are short and too the point rather than the parables which tend to be mini stories and therefore much longer.

A summary below of every occurrence of any saying or teaching from Jesus that had the word "Verily" either at the beginning or somewhere within the saying. There are 98 that were found. There could be more. It must be stated that the sayings or teachings below and The Parables emphasize the fact that everything Jesus Christ said, or did, was important, or it would never have been said, or done.

If you have been drawn to this article just a few of these sayings or maybe all will have some impact. They have been left for your own interpretation and the context that the saying was used you would need to read the whole chapter to "Truly" understand the meaning contained within that verse, but many stand on their own.....if not all of them.
