39 Bible Verses that contain the words the Son of Man

39 Bible Verses that contain the words "Son of Man"

The expression or phrase "Son of Man" is mentioned 39 times in the New Testament of the Bible (KJV) and mentioned many more times in the Old Testament often in relation to prophecy and this term or phrase is used in relation to Jesus and even by Jesus. Obviously there is some importance to this reference.  But surely Jesus is the "Son of God" is the question that everybody asks, so why is he described and often describes himself in the Bible as the "Son of Man"?

This is another of those conundrums just like "The Parables of Jesus" and why  the word Verily appears so  frequently in shorter teachings when Jesus spoke.

To get to the root and the very beginning of this, you have to go to Daniel 7:13-14 which was a prophecy by Daniel of the coming of Jesus Christ.

13. I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
14. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Jesus was born of a virgin called Mary that became pregnant by the Holy Spirit and who gave birth to The Son of God who was in human form and he was aligned with humanity as a result but also in alignment with God. He was the second state in the Tri State or the Trinity of "The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost (Spirit)" often heard in the infamous blessings in Churches even  to this very day "I bless you in the name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost"

So "The Son of Man" has a double meaning in that he is "The Son of God" but in human form delivered to save mankind from his sins and therefore he describes himself as "The Son of Man"

This dilemma was revealed just before the crucifixion when he was approached by the elders and high priests as demonstrated very clearly in Matthew 26:63-64

Matthew 26:63
But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.

Matthew 26:64
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

More detail is given in Luke 22:66-71

66.And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
67. Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
68. And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
69. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
70. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
71. And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

In summary the Chief Priests think he has answered in a cryptic way that he is the "Son of God" whereas Jesus says "You are saying I am the "Son of God" but I call myself "The Son of Man". Jesus knows it does not matter what answer he gives........ his destiny which is in prophecy is to be crucified.

Why does he keep using this "Son of Man" line? Because he is fulfilling the prophecy mentioned in Daniel 7:13-14, the Prophecy of Daniel all those years ago where Daniel called him "The Son of Man". In that prophecy though Jesus is described as "behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven" which is about as far removed from the situation he was in at the time being grilled by the chief priests, scribes and elders, but he sticks to his guns regardless.

The Prophet Ezekiel is referenced in the Bible 93 times as the "Son of Man" but he was the product of male and female human flesh whereas Jesus was the product of the combining of Holy Spirit and Female Human Flesh. Son of Man can be interpreted as meaning a product of human flesh in human form.

Finally the Son of Man is referenced twice in the Book of Revelation by St John the Divine that foretells of the "Son of Man" and his return which would be the infamous "Second Coming"

Chapter 14 Book of Revelation KJV

Chapter 14 Book of Revelation KJV. The Lamb and 144,000 virgins on Mount Sion, redeemed from earth and before the throne of God. The angels and the Son of Man with their sharp sickles reap the earth

1. And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.
2. And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
3. And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.
4. These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
5. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
6. And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
7. Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
8. And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
9. And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10. The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
11. And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
12. Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
13. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
14. And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
15. And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
16. And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.
17. And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
18. And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
19. And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
20. And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
