Why is there life on Earth and nowhere else?

The Billion dollar Question. Why is planet earth the only planet that can support life? OR Why is there only life on earth? OR Why is earth the only planet to sustain life OR Why does life exist on earth and nowhere else? I don't have the answer, I don't think anybody really does but that doesn't mean you can't attempt to find an answer either via Science or Religion.

This is a personal question and open ended article, that has been on the back of my mind since writing the The Big Bang Theory V God Created the Universe?  where the question was raised near the end with mutterings on this very subject........ excerpt below

On a final note, If science says that our world and our universe were created via The Big Bang, why is it that even now after discovering planetary systems outside our solar system and knowing now all the planets within our solar system, Planet Earth is the only one that has the capability to sustain life and importantly human life. Why is that………….is there a scientific explanation for that or is it an act beyond human grasp and the realms of science in what can only be called “Divine Intervention” by a higher superior power??

I'm not a Scientist or Astronomer but this question has also become more prominent with the Juno probe getting closer to Jupiter as we speak with it's ETA being 4th July 2016 which just happens to be Independence Day in the US. What will it find (if anything) will it find life even in it's primitive form or evidence there was life millions or billions of years ago..........but not now? Do the Moons of Jupiter instead of the Planet itself maybe hold the key to the existence of life. Will it provide answers to many questions, or will it merely provide answers that generate more questions with no answers?

Theories about Life on Earth and whether there is life beyond earth?

There are many theories why Earth can sustain plant, animal and human life and other planets in our solar system cannot. Here's some of those theories starting with the simpler theories that anybody can understand and onto the more complex answers which most people can't understand or don't want to understand..

1. The Goldilocks Zone. If you know the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story then this principle can apparently be applied to Planet Earth. Basically it's not so far away from the Sun that it is too cold to support life nor is it too close to the Sun that everything get's burnt to a frazzle.

2. The "We Don't Know" Theory. Some say yes there is life on this planet and the other planets in our solar system apparently do not have life, but are we really sure that is the case. We haven't conclusively proved that there is no life on other planets neither have we proven that there is life either. We don't have at present the technology or means to find out such things in short "We Don't Know" enough to say there is or is not life beyond earth, but that doesn't mean that there is no other life out there.

3. The "There is an Earth in every Solar System" Theory. This theory states that every solar system has a Sun or Bright Star of which there are planets at varying distances orbiting around it. These planets in similar solar systems will demonstrate the same properties as our solar system with life only being supported on the planet in the sweet spot or in the "Goldilocks Zone" such as Earth or it's equivalent and the rest will not be able to support life in any form. The only problem is we have no proof of that fact or the technology to prove that fact either. A recent NASA discovery back in 2013 proves this point. These planets seem earth like in appearance but can they sustain life. See the video below, again there is a chance that these planets are capable of supporting life BUT there is no evidence at present to prove that fact.

4. The UFO Effect. If you believe in aliens and UFO's then with all the sightings (confirmed or otherwise) there just has to be other forms of life out there and Planet Earth is not the only planet to support plant, animal or human life. There could be undocumented forms of life out there in the form of Alien life that doesn't fit into the normal three categories but is still a form of life none the less. Again we have no answers on this?

5. The "Life Comes to Us" Theory. Humans have only FOUND one planet with life....the one we are on. There could be tens, hundreds, or thousands of planets with life...we just can't find them. We might never find them. Unless...they find us.

6. "The Fermi Paradox" Theory or Fermi's paradox, named after Enrico Fermi, is the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence and high probability estimates, for the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations. The basic points of the argument, made by physicists Enrico Fermi (1901–1954) and Michael H. Hart (born 1932), are:

There are billions of stars in the galaxy that are similar to the Sun many of which are billions of years older than Earth.
With high probability, some of these stars will have Earth-like planets and if the Earth is typical, some might develop intelligent life.
Some of these civilizations might develop interstellar travel, a step the Earth is investigating now.
Even at the slow pace of currently envisioned interstellar travel, the Milky Way galaxy could be completely traversed in about a million years.
According to this line of thinking, the Earth should have already been visited by extraterrestrial aliens?

7. The "Drake Equation". Apparently to detect any form of life in Space it's all down to a certain formula called The Drake Equation which answers the question How can we estimate the number of technological civilizations that might exist among the stars? The Drake Equation, was first presented by Frank Drake in 1961 and identifies specific factors thought to play a role in the development of such civilizations. Although there is no unique solution to this equation, it is a generally accepted tool used by the scientific community to examine these factors. Within the limits of our existing technology, any practical search for distant intelligent life must necessarily be a search for some manifestation of a distant technology according to Drake.

Here's the equation

[caption id="attachment_1046" align="aligncenter" width="540"]The Drake Equation The Drake Equation Where,[/caption]

N = The number of civilizations in The Milky Way Galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable.

R* = The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life.

fp = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems.

ne = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.

fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears.

fi = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.

fc = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.

L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

The Biblical Explanation?

The biblical explanation doesn't have any mathematical formulas, doesn't rely on any inconclusive theories or rely on UFO's to prove that there is or is not life beyond this planet. It's all there in black and white in the first Book of the Bible called Genesis and in Chapter 1. God created the World and the Universe in Six Days and rested on the Seventh.

BUT many Christians think, ‘God must have created life elsewhere, otherwise this enormous universe would be an awful waste of space.’ This seems to be the major underlying reason why people think that there must be other life 'out there'. However, our thinking should be based on what God said He did (in the Bible), and not what we think He would, should or might have done.

There is mention of other worlds in the Bible with this verse

Hebrews 11:3: ‘Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.’

There is mention of God's creation in Psalm 8:1,3,9 which states, “O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth, Who hast displayed Thy splendor above the heavens! …When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, The moon and the stars, which Thou has ordained; …O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth!”

But there is no mention of other life beyond our planet. The Old Testament refers only to the Earth and the Heavens and does not imply that stars are merely distant suns with other potential worlds in orbit, indeed, it does not even imply that there are other worlds in orbit around our own sun. There is no mention of other life in other worlds in the Bible, only on this planet. Did God plan it this way, is Earth really the only planet that has any form of life and that is how it was intended and no matter how hard we look, we will not find any other life for that reason?

Maybe you have the answer? Which brings us back to the original question. Why does life exist on earth and nowhere else?
